Spring birth announcement tour

Today marks my first real day in the office in quite a while. Several weeks of planes, trains and automobiles. There was a brief vacation shoved in there, but for the most part, @lkjohannesmeyer and I have been away from home in some shape or fashion showing demonstrations and extolling the vision behind Spring to our population of SE client leadership.

The reason this is momentous is that as these visits come to a close, we’re entering a new phase in the process of creating Spring. What phase? Well, I’d call it the second trimester in a way. We know we’re going to have a baby, we have a little baby bump and we’re really excited about shopping for clothes and toys but there’s a ton of work to be done. Let’s stick with this (almost inappropriate) metaphor for a second…

The team here at Solid Earth have now gone out to our customers and made the announcement widely. We’re having a baby!

The reaction has been pretty varied. They’ve ranged from, “Good for you… so what’s for dinner?” all the way to, “Great… what color are its eyes?” Where is it going to college?” And there you have the real challenge. All those questions have answers. Some are apparent now and some are not. But for the excited family, the sooner those answers are available, the better.

So, as you can see, we’ve been focused on making sure everyone is aware of what we’re doing, why we’re doing it and what they can expect as all this work gets done; as this delivery date begins to come into focus. Talking about what our adult child will look like at this early stage is certainly not an easy task. But consider that to some people, we’re late. To others, the innovations represented by Spring may be too soon.

Just look around your own office. You’ll see people who are super-techy and those who are, um, not. You’ve got the girl wearing Google Goggles uploading cat videos. You’ve also got the guy with the flip phone and the AOL email address. This is the population we serve. Unlike many professions, the real estate community is a cross-section of the larger society, with all those permutations in culture, experience and varying technology appetites.

Some are counting the seconds to get their hands on the “next big thing” and others (lots of others) are more than content with the status quo. But our job is clear. To keep with the baby metaphor, the growing process is in high gear. We’re not just a little pregnant. This thing is happening and now everyone in our family knows about it and I’m happy to say, pretty excited.

As proud parents, myself and the rest of the team are eager to show Spring to everyone, but we’re careful, too. It’s a baby and it’s not fully developed but it’s growing amazingly quickly. Those that saw it at Midyear won’t believe their eyes in Orlando.

Yes, there are questions and concerns about a huge range of things. Also as parents, we’re over-the-top cautious about potential pitfalls and are covering every base to insure this bundle of joy is delivered successfully and with 10 fingers and 10 toes.

So, thanks for having us in your offices Solid Earth family. We can’t wait to show you the next phase. I’m craving pickles.

Spring in our nation’s capitol

Next week will be our second public viewing of our new MLS platform, Spring. The first seems like years ago in Anaheim at NAR 2011. Back then, we debuted Spring on iPads and PCs in our newly redesigned booth and turned quite a few heads on concept alone. A mobile-focused MLS platform? Not a retro fit of an existing code base? What kind of company puts all its chips on the table in a struggling market to start completely fresh on a completely new medium? Well, we do. Damn the torpedoes.

So what will you see in Washington next week? You’ll see the same booth with two iPads and two PCs demonstrating Spring, which has grown from infant stage to full on adolescence. I’ll hold my description of any details and simply ask, as a friend and business partner, that you come by the booth at some point and enter with an open mind.

This is not the MLS as you know it and it’s not meant to be. Come hungry for innovation and be prepared to leave your assumptions about where this industry is headed on the floor just outside booth #504. I’ve said it before and I don’t want to over-dramatize, but we’re doing something really important here.

Come see, discuss, add your opinion and hear ours. Booth 504. Right up front.

Safe travels.

First Day of Spring

It was obvious to everyone that we needed to do something for the first day of Spring. I mean, when you’re product is called Spring, it kind of goes without saying. We thought about flowers. We considered baby rabbits and chickens. In the end, we settled on beach balls.

What better way to build excitement about a new software platform than with colorful, inflatable plastic orbs?

So all our clients received (yesterday or today) a little gift pack with a beach ball (some assembly required) and a card which reads:

March 21st, the first day of Spring, is a timely reminder that Solid Earth is hard at work building the Spring platform. For now, enjoy the sunshine… plan a trip to the beach…drink a margarita. But, know that we’re looking forward to showing you what we’ve been up to. Thanks for being part of the Solid Earth Team. Your friends in Huntsville.

If you haven’t seen your gift pack yet, it’ll be there soon. Probably today. Happy Spring and we look forward to the next Spring demo. You’re going to like what you see.

Happy Anniversary GLAR and a walk down memory lane

And just like that Solid Earth and the Greater Louisville Association of REALTORS have been business partners for 10 years. This is a special event for me personally, since my bride and I have been married for the same amount of time.

Incidentally, according to the Internet, the appropriate 10th anniversary gift for married couples is Tin/Aluminum (traditional) or Diamond (modern). You just know that someone in the diamond lobby invented that last one. Diamonds for a 10 year? Have we even paid the wedding off yet? So, sadly we won’t be buying our clients in Louisville any diamonds. Maybe something for the 20th (Platinum). I’ll start saving now.

So I was in Louisville yesterday providing a little “state of the company” presentation which included a brief tour of Spring, the new MLS platform to which this blog is dedicated. To underscore our need for a shift in approach to MLS, I showed them this bad boy:

Blackberry 6750

That my friends was the first Blackberry with phone capabilities. It launched in 2002, the same year we installed LIST-IT in Louisville. It was quite an advanced piece of hardware. By the way, the Treo 650 ($499 retail), also released that year. I remember seeing no fewer than 7,000 of these at Midyear in 2003.

The purpose of this show-and-tell in GLAR was to illustrate to the group that while we’ve certainly enjoyed our run with the existing platform, it’s definitely time for a change and not only in the ways they expect. Yes, LIST-IT has seen hundreds of adjustments since the launch, but as illustrated by the Blackberry, technology has clearly moved varying directions since 2002 and it’s time we responded – together.

Stop for a moment and consider all that’s happened since 2002 that has had impact on the way you interact with others, the way we do business, even the way a real estate transaction progresses.

Trulia, Zillow, Redfin, regionalization, data security, syndication, VOWs, RETS, Facebook, 3G and 4G, the mass-proliferation of WiFi, the iphone, ipad and amazing advance of mobile devices… the list goes on.

Now consider the astounding compression of this advancement. More has happened to affect the real estate industry in the last 10 years than might have happened in the previous 100 years. The pace is amazing.

By the way, the iPad 3 launches in 3 weeks.

Altruistic Arguing

Yesterday was the first of several demos of the new Spring platform we’re beginning to schedule in coming weeks and months. This one was held here at Solid Earth and will probably be the last, unfortunately. Not that we didn’t have a great time showing our clients the war room full of sticky notes, our scribbled whiteboards and excellent washrooms, but our clients are all over the country and therefore few are close enough to enjoy a real Solid Earth open house, which is what we hosted yesterday.

At 3pm, the plastic was ripped from the dessert tray and the curtain went up on the latest iteration of Spring.

I can’t divulge many details only to say that one of the highlights of the event was an exchange between myself, CTO Robb, COO Leslie and one of the attendees of the demo. She (who will remain nameless) made the point that a previous comment I’d made about our approach to re-inventing a particular module was, in their opinion, stupid.

I couldn’t help but smile and listen to the entire explanation about why this person felt this way. No, one doesn’t normally smile when accused of being stupid, but it made me realize a few things. 1) They knew we were there to listen. This didn’t have to be advertised, it’s the nature of our relationship. 2) We had provided a safe, no-pressure forum for its dissemination and 3) They knew we’d act on that opinion.

That’s why I smiled. We operate in an environment where we not only listen to our customers’ cheers, but also their criticisms, however tough they might be to hear.

That’s the environment that excites us. That’s the environment where creativity and function meet and make great products. We need more exchanges with client leadership where we’re arguing a point for the greater good of the MLS, the broker and the consumer and not necessarily in that order.

I hope we’ll have more conversations like this in demos across our network. I’m really looking forward to it. Exciting times.
